CONFIGURATION

Q: I am trying to move some GIF and HTML files to my PDA. When I try and install these files I get a message "File type cannot be installed to PDA RAM".
A: To transfer these types of files to the PDA RAM there must be some type of translation application, like Avantgo for html files or SplashPhoto for the GIF files or you would nee to transfer them to an expansion card/module for your device.

FEATURES

Q: In earlier versions of FilePoint I could drag and drop files on the handheld and not I cannot. How does this work now?
A: Now you may highlight the file and then tap the appropriate icon (i.e., for example, the Trash Can icon to delete) at the bottom of the screen.

Q: Does FilePoint recognize every 3rd party application ?
A: FilePoint's design includes hard-coded recognition of the most popular Palm OS applications (see our Bachmann Utilities page for more details) and native Palm applications, such as Memo. While future versions of FilePoint will indeed add hard-code recognition , it is virtually impossible for us to do so for every one of the thousands of applications on the market. With this in mind however, we plan on including a function which will allow you to identify new content to FilePoint by application. This will allow you to add recognition for your own content within FilePoint.

Q: Does FilePoint support memory expansion devices such as CF, SD, etc. ?
A: Yes, FilePoint provides organizational support for data on your handheld's built-in RAM storage and expansion cards. FilePoint supports Secure Digital (SD), Compact Flash (CF), Multimedia Cards (MMC), Sony's proprietary Memory Stick, the Handspring compatible MemPlug and Handspring's Springboard Module .

Q: How do I launch my .jpg files using FilePoint?
A: FilePoint will look for the following installed apps, in order, if you ask it to open a jpg:
  • Palm Photo (on Tungsten T-series)
  • Clie Viewer (on Sony)
  • Treo Camera Viewer
  • Splash Photo
If none of these exist, you will get the message: "FilePoint was unable to find a supported photo viewer on your handheld. To open the file, please install a supported photo viewer and try again."

Q: When I select a music file to play FilePoint tells me to install a supported music player and try again. My handheld plays music files - why can't it play through File Point?
A: You would need to install a music player to the handheld. We recommend Pocket Tunes, www.normsoft.com. It works well with FilePoint.

Q: I have a Tungsten T3 with FilePoint. How do I copy all of the contents from my 48meg CF card to my 32meg SD card?
A: You won't be able to do this using FilePoint or FilePoint Pro because the contents of the card would have to be copied to RAM and there is usually not enough RAM to do this. We recommend using a card reader or we suggest you look into this capability using BackUp Buddy by BlueNomad.

Q: I have QuickWord which does not allow me to access files on an expansion card. The application would be more use to me if I could store my files on the expansion card and be able to access them from Quickoffice.
A: You could accomplish launching these files using FilePoint or FilePoint Pro.

Q: I noticed a print icon among FilePoint's toolbar. Does FilePoint come with printing support ?
A: You may download a trial version of PrintBoy Premium to give the print icon a try. The trial versions of FilePoint and PrintBoy both time out at 30 days. We often have special offers on both FilePoint and PrintBoy.

Q: Why doesn't my "Print" icon work on FilePoint ?
A: You would need to download a trial version of PrintBoy Premium. This would allow you to print many 3rd party application files. The trial period is 30 days.

Q: Can I launch anyone's printing software with the "print" icon ?
A: No, only PrintBoy communicates with the print icon inside of FilePoint.

Q: I created a folder assignment, or edited a document, FilePoint is not reflecting my change on my screen. Why is this ?
A: You may need to tap the "Refresh" icon at the top right of your FilePoint screen. FilePoint can be set to refresh each time you access it, however performance may be faster if you choose to refresh manually, rather than doing so every time you access it.

Q: There are scroll arrows on the screen in various spots. Is there any faster method of moving among a long list of file entries ?
A: Yes, the hardware scroll buttons on your device will allow you to more quickly scroll among your list of entries.

Q: How do I remove FilePoint Pro from my PDA and Desktop computer?
A; To remove FilePoint from your PDA use the App/Delete function on the PDA. Find the FilePoint file and delete. On the desktop, use the Add/Remove Programs function in the Control Panel of your desktop.

NETWORK

Q: What do I need to take advantage of FilePoint's Network capabilities?
A: To take advantage of FilePoint's wireless networking features, you will need a Palm OS handheld that can connect to standard TCP/IP networks. Many handhelds are now available with built-in wireless connectivity including:

  • PalmOne's Tungsten C, which has a built in Wi-Fi networking feature which can connect to your network via a Wi-Fi access point
  • PalmOne's Tungsten T series, which has a built-in Bluetooth feature that can be used for networking with Bluetooth-enabled PC's and access point
  • PalmOne's Treo smartphone which can connect to the internet using a cellular data connection, and which can be networked securely using a variety of 3rd party secure networking "VPN" software solutions
  • Alphasmart's Dana Wireless, which has a built in Wi-Fi networking feature
  • Sony's Clie series, several models which have built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth radios
In addition to these models with built-in connectivity, there are several add-on cards, cases and other accessories which can add networking functionality to existing handhelds.

Q: I want to use FilePoint to access my network servers from behind a firewall. How do I do that?
A: FilePoint on the handheld doesn't handle firewall security, you will need to figure out the security scenario that works best for you. One option is to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). VPN clients for some Palm OS devices are available from Certicom (www.certicom.com). Another option is to open up the necessary TCP/IP ports on your firewall to allow network requests to flow through. The three port numbers are 137, 139 and 445. Note that we do not recommend opening up these ports to the general public on your firewall due to the security risk.

Q: I need an IPSEC VPN solution. Can you recommend one that you have tested with the TREO 600?
A: Try certicom (www.certicom.com). We are not certain if they have a Treo 600 option yet, but their Movian VPN is compatible with other Palms.

Q: Network discovery, mapped drives or host file options are not working to access network shares. We are using mergic vpn with FilePoint. Can you help?
A: Our PrintBoy, FilePoint and Mobile Backup solutions require only a TCP/IP connection to your network in order to fully function. Whatever additional security protocols you install on top of the basic Tungsten C TCP/IP support is totally up to you, and should not affect the operation of our software, as long as the handheld can still establish a TCP/IP connection to the target computers and printers on the network. Note that FilePoint and Mobile Backup make use of SMB/CIFS, which are standard Windows networking protocols, so whatever firewall or vpn solution you go with would need to allow these protocols through.

The easiest way to think of it is that it is no different than if you were to take a Wi-Fi enabled laptop and allow it to print and exchange files with network. You have similar security issues, and when you add firewall and vpn to the equation, these security measures do not block basic TCP/IP activity such as http, pop, or other protocols that you wish to allow.

Q: I have a Domain, so there is no WOrkGroup. Can you clarify what I need to enter to make the proper Network connection?
A: Enter the WINS Server Address (Server IP Address) by opening FilePoint, tap the time in the top left corner to access the menu, choose Options, then Network Preferences then Add/Edit WINS Addresses and enter the IP Address of the server running the WINS service. This will allow FilePoint to automatically discover the computers on your network. Then enter the Network Login information in #1 when prompted.

Q: Can I use FilePoint to connect to folders on my MAC?
A: You can connect to folders on your MAC but it must support SMB (Samba).

Q: How does FilePoint network printing work?
A: For specific instructions, take a look at the FilePoint Quick Start Guide..

Q: I could use FilePoint fine for accessing my network until I had to change my network password. Now when I try to connect I get and error telling me that my username or password is invalid, but I can't seem to find a way to change it.
A: The easiest way is to delete the FilePoint account settings file, which will force FilePoint to prompt you for username/password/domain just like it did at the start. This info is stored in a file called fplninfo. To do this, go to the Palm Applications Launcher, tap the menu, choose App | Delete, scroll down and select the file fplninfo. Tap the delete button. Now go back to FilePoint and tap Network, and it should force a new login.

Q: How do I connect to my Network?
