Bachmann Software Announces Wireless Remote File Access for Palm Handhelds and Smartphones

FilePoint 4.0 enables secure remote file access and Google Desktop Search, over a Smartphone or Wi-Fi connection

Sparta, NJ (Sept 20, 2005)... Bachmann Software (www.bachmannsoftware.com), a leader in wireless productivity software for handhelds and smartphones, today announced FilePoint 4.0 for Palm OS®, a new version of its popular file manager and networking software product which enables wireless remote desktop file access from a wireless handheld or smartphone.

Using FilePoint 4.0, owners of Palm® wireless smartphones and handhelds such as the popular Treo™ smartphones, select Tungsten™ handhelds, and LifeDrive™ mobile manager, can now wirelessly connect to their home or work computer(1) and browse their computer’s folders and mapped network drives, or quickly find their files using Bachmann’s remote desktop search feature powered by Google Desktop Search. Users of FilePoint can then wirelessly download their documents, spreadsheets, music, photos or other files directly to their handheld, where they may be viewed, edited, printed or even emailed to others. Full security is maintained during all file transfers thanks to FilePoint’s system of passwords and strong encryption.

"LifeDrive customers want to carry their documents, photos, music and other files with them and be productive wherever they go, and the ability to print Word, Excel and PowerPoint files continues to be an important business requirement," said Page Murray, palmOne vice president of marketing. "We felt that Bachmann Software provides the best mobile printing solution available today for palmOne products, and we are pleased to make PrintBoy available to our LifeDrive customers."

“A major goal for FilePoint 4.0 was to make it easy for wireless smartphone users to always have the ability to connect back to their office or home computers, no matter where they are”, explained Glenn Bachmann, founder and president of Bachmann Software. “Handheld owners can be so much more productive if only they have access to that one important client document, that new spreadsheet that they were working on last week, or even the MP3’s they purchased online the other day. With FilePoint 4.0, we believe we have enabled that new level of productivity.”

“With their FilePoint and PrintBoy products, Bachmann has long been a valuable contributor to the success of Palm in the mobile computing industry," said Paul Leeper, director for Developer Relations at Palm. "We are thrilled to see them continue to evolve their solutions to meet the requirements of the newest generation of wireless handheld and smartphone customers."

“FilePoint 4.0 is designed to provide wireless users the extremely useful ability to search and access remote files previously “locked” on the desktop,” said Larry Berkin, director strategic alliances, PalmSource. “Palm OS provides a flexible foundation for innovative developers like Bachmann to offer unique functionality to Palm OS users worldwide.”

Network Browsing and Google Desktop Search Support

FilePoint 4.0 offers handheld users two key methods for locating important files, as follows:

Network Browsing: Network browsing works just like Explorer on a Windows PC, giving users a friendly way to browse commonly accessed folders and their contents on local hard drives or mapped network drives. Network browsing works independently of Windows Networking, thus it is uniquely suited for smartphone users who use wide-area cellphone connections and cannot safely establish access to a windows network share.

Google Desktop Search: FilePoint integrates with Google’s new Desktop Search capability. With Desktop Search, FilePoint users enter keywords on their handheld, and FilePoint works in conjunction with Google Desktop Search on the remote computer to deliver back to the handheld a list of the most relevant matching files.

Compatibility and Technical Requirements

FilePoint 4.0 works with any Palm smartphone or handheld that is capable of achieving a wireless network connection, including Palm Treo smartphones as well as Wi-Fi enabled Palm devices. FilePoint’s server component requires a standard Windows desktop computer with Internet access. Google’s Desktop Search is also optionally required in order to use the remote desktop search capability.

Pricing and Availability

FilePoint 4.0 is available for purchase directly from Bachmann Software as well as authorized online software stores for $39.99 per user.
