Bachmann Software Introduces Wireless Printing Solution for Palm Powered Devices
PrintBoy Anywhere supports Infrared, Bluetooth, 802.11b, Network printing
June 25, 2002...
Today, Bachmann Software introduced PrintBoy™ Anywhere, the latest version of its market leading PrintBoy software. PrintBoy Anywhere allows Palm OS® users to print their business-critical information by selecting their wireless method of choice, and sending their data to the printer. Whether the users work in an environment supporting Bluetooth, 802.11b (also known as Wi-Fi), have modem access, or infrared, PrintBoy Anywhere allows them to produce their data to the printer of their choice.
Until this release, Bachmann Software had focused their PrintBoy support to infrared (IR), since virtually all handheld devices come equipped with IR. However, the continued adoption of LAN and wireless infrastructure (including both Bluetooth and network alternatives) necessitated the expansion of PrintBoy to other wireless communication protocols.
Wireless printing fundamentally requires three things: a transmitter, a receiver and compatible software to allow the two devices to communicate. The transmitter, in this case the PDA, is equipped with IR, and can be retrofitted with either Bluetooth, 802.11b or modem/dial-up capabilities with either an adapter (sled) or a special card which fits into the secure digital expansion slot. Likewise, the receiver is the printer, and it too must be equipped either with an IR port or adapter that communicates via IR, Bluetooth or a network access connection. PrintBoy Anywhere serves as the third component, providing software which includes print drivers for most of the popular commercial printers.
"PrintBoy Anywhere allows Palm OS device users to fully leverage the benefits of their devices' wireless capabilities," said Olaf Besgen, Palm Inc.'s business development manager for Local Area Wireless Solutions. "Wirelessly sending a document to a printer in the next office is among the most compelling ways to realize the convenience of wireless computing."
"With a variety of wireless choices available to the enterprise, we are committed to ensuring PrintBoy supports whatever platform they choose," said Dan Reuvers, Bachmann Software's vice president of business development. "By enabling handheld users to produce their documents under almost any circumstances, we are making mobile computing increasingly practical."
PrintBoy Anywhere is expected to sell for $39.99. Registered customers of PrintBoy Deluxe will be able to upgrade to PrintBoy Anywhere for $14.99. Customers may purchase either product at Bachmann Software's website at www.bachmannsoftware.com.
